Best time to visit Kailash

The season at Lake Manasarovar is short and hard-edged. Too early and the passes are frozen. Too late and the snow shuts the kora, as it did in September 2026.

Ngari is a high desert. It gets about 614 mm of precipitation a year, most of it in July and August, and nights below freezing in every month. The lake freezes from about November to March, and most guesthouses and businesses close (China Highlights).

Tours run from about April to mid-October. Inside that window, the right month depends on what you care about: clear views, warm-ish days, low prices, or the Saga Dawa festival.

The quick answer

May, June and September are the best months: clear skies, stable trails and fewer crowds than midsummer. July and August are warmest but bring monsoon cloud and Nepal-side road damage. Saga Dawa (31 May in 2026) draws the biggest crowds and the highest prices. October can be crisp and clear, or closed: in 2026 heavy snow shut the kora on 26 September. From November to March the lake freezes and tours stop. Most 2027 departures run from April or May to mid-October.

What is the best month to visit Kailash Mansarovar?

June and September. Both have clear skies and stable trails, with fewer crowds than July and August and less snow risk than October.

June comes before the monsoon reaches the plateau; September comes after it, with cool, dry air. Both are cold at night. In late May and early June, avoid the full-moon week of Saga Dawa if you dislike crowds, or aim for it if the festival is the reason you are going.

Can you visit Kailash in winter?

No. From about November to March the lake freezes, the kora is closed and most guesthouses shut. Permits for Kailash are not issued in winter.

In 2026 winter came early. Heavy snow started on 25 September, and the Purang Cultural and Tourism Bureau closed the Kailash kora and the scenic area from 2 pm on 26 September. Flights from Lhasa to Burang were cancelled and traffic on the G219 was controlled (Explore Tibet; Snow Lion Tours). On 21 October Explore Tibet reported that Tibet Travel Permits for the kora were suspended from 20 October.

The full story is in the kora closure post.

When is Saga Dawa, and should you go then?

Saga Dawa falls on the full moon of the fourth Tibetan month, usually late May or June. In 2026 the main day was 31 May, when the Tarboche flagpole was raised.

Thousands of Tibetan pilgrims gather at Tarboche, on the first stretch of the kora, to watch the great prayer pole come down and go up again with new flags. It is the most spectacular day of the year at Kailash (Tibet Vista festival guide). It is also the most expensive, the most crowded, and in 2026 the month from 17 May to 16 June was closed to Indian pilgrims.

Go if you want to see it and book months ahead. Skip it if you want quiet trails and normal prices. Many Tibetans believe a kora in a Horse year, like 2026, counts many times over, which made this year's crowds larger than usual.

Is July or August a good time to go?

They work, with caveats. These are the warmest months and the busiest, with monsoon cloud over the peaks and the highest flood risk on the Nepal routes.

Most of the year's rain falls now. Over the Tibet side it often comes as afternoon cloud and showers; over Nepal it brings landslides and floods. Both recent Rasuwagadhi floods hit in summer: July 2025 and 26 August 2026. The Simikot helicopters stop in bad weather, and in July 2018 more than 1,500 pilgrims were stranded by it (Business Standard).

If school holidays force July or August, choose a Lhasa route over a Nepal one and keep spare days at the end of your trip.

What is the weather like at Lake Manasarovar?

Cold, dry and bright. Even in June, nights drop to about -2 °C, and in April to about -10 °C. The wind picks up most afternoons.

At about 4,590 m the sun is strong and the air holds little heat. Expect frost on the tent fly or guesthouse window most mornings, and snow on the Dolma La in any month. On the kora, days two and three can feel like different seasons: hot sun climbing out of Dirapuk, sleet on the pass an hour later.

Pack for both: a down jacket, a waterproof shell, warm gloves and a hat, plus sunglasses and SPF 50. Guesthouse rooms are unheated or barely heated.

When is the cheapest time to go?

April, May and late October, outside Saga Dawa. The peak price windows are Saga Dawa, July and August, and late September into early October.

That is Tibet Vista's own seasonal pattern (Tibet Vista). Cheap months come with a catch: April is very cold, and October can close without warning, as 2026 showed. The best balance of price and conditions is usually mid-May or mid-September. What the tour price covers is in what a Kailash tour includes.

When do 2027 tours start?

Most operators plan departures from April or May to mid-October 2027. Explore Tibet lists fixed departures from 5 April to 18 October 2027.

Nothing official has been published for 2027 yet. China has not announced the Indian pilgrim quota, and the Kyirong border has no reopening date (Everest Holiday). Lhasa-based group tours are the most predictable option, since they do not depend on the Nepal crossings.

Book for June or September with free cancellation if you can, and follow the 2027 season post for confirmed dates.
