Booking choice: The yatra via Lhasa, 11 days. Book this Tour details
Lake Manasarovar is in Burang County, Ngari Prefecture, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. It lies about 20 km south-east of Mount Kailash and a short drive from the borders with India and Nepal. You cannot reach it on your own: every route goes through a registered agency, with the permits and guide arranged before you set off.
Which route you can take depends on your passport and on what is open. As of October 2026, the Kyirong road from Nepal is shut after a flood, and the kora itself closed for the winter after snow in late September. Here is how each route works, so you can plan for spring 2027.
The quick answer
Most foreigners fly or take the train to Lhasa, acclimatise for three days, then drive 1,200 to 1,700 km west over four or five days. From Kathmandu you can fly to Lhasa and join that road. Indian pilgrims mostly use the Simikot and Hilsa helicopter route from Nepalgunj, or the government yatra via Lipulekh or Nathu La. The Kyirong border has been closed since a flood on 26 August 2026, and Tatopani is closed too. Lhasa to Burang flights exist but land you at 4,250 m with no acclimatisation.

Which country is Lake Manasarovar in?
China. It is in the Tibet Autonomous Region, in Burang County of Ngari Prefecture, close to the borders with India and Nepal.
The nearest town is Burang (Purang, also called Taklakot by Indian pilgrims), about 50 to 60 km south. Darchen, the base for the Kailash kora, is 30 to 40 km by road. The Lipulekh Pass into India and the Hilsa crossing into Nepal are both within a day's drive, which is why the lake has always drawn pilgrims from the south.
Because it is in Tibet, Chinese rules apply: you need a visa (or visa-free entry where your passport allows it) plus Tibet permits, and you travel with a guide. See the Tibet Vista permit list for the full set.
How do you get from Lhasa to Lake Manasarovar?
By road, over four or five days: Lhasa to Shigatse, then Lhatse or Saga, then Darchen and the lake. The distance is about 1,200 to 1,700 km, all paved.
Group tours usually stop for the night at Shigatse (3,840 m), Saga (about 4,600 m) and then Darchen or the lakeshore. Many add an Everest detour near Tingri. The road is good tarmac most of the way, and the drive is the acclimatisation: you climb slowly and sleep a little higher each night.
A typical 15-day plan looks like this: three nights in Lhasa, four days driving west, one night at Darchen, two on the kora, one at the lake, then the drive back (Explore Tibet itinerary).
| Stage | Distance | Sleep at |
|---|---|---|
| Lhasa to Shigatse | About 270 km | 3,840 m |
| Shigatse to Saga | About 450 km | About 4,600 m |
| Saga to Darchen or the lake | About 480 to 500 km | 4,590 to 4,670 m |
| Kora, three days | About 52 km on foot | 4,800 to 5,210 m |

Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa, then drive west to the lake and Kailash, permits and guide arranged.
Book thisCan you get to Lake Manasarovar from Kathmandu?
Yes, by flying to Lhasa and driving west, or via the far west of Nepal and the Hilsa border. The Kyirong road route is closed for now.
Before August 2026 the fastest road from Kathmandu went north to the Rasuwagadhi crossing (about 140 km, 7 to 9 hours), then into Tibet at Kyirong. On 26 August 2026 a flash flood destroyed the border post, bridges and road. It was the second flood there in two years. YoWangdu lists Kyirong as closed indefinitely, and by early October no reopening date had been announced (Everest Holiday, 4 October 2026). Tatopani, the old Kodari crossing, is closed as well.
That leaves the flight to Lhasa, which the yatra via Lhasa uses. The overland Kyirong yatra cannot run until the road is rebuilt, and nor can the overland leg of the 19-day Tibet expedition, whose listing still describes the Friendship Highway from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Ask that operator how it routes in 2027. Details in the Kyirong closure post.

How does the Simikot and Hilsa route work?
Fly from Nepalgunj to Simikot, take a small helicopter to Hilsa on the border, then drive about 105 km into Tibet. It is the shortest route, about 7 or 8 days.
Pilgrims fly or drive to Nepalgunj (about 190 km from Lucknow), spend a night there, fly to Simikot in Humla, then hop by helicopter to Hilsa. Each helicopter carries only about four passengers, so weather delays stack up fast. From Hilsa a vehicle takes you through Purang to the lake and Darchen in about four hours (Kathmandu Post, May 2026).
Five helicopter companies ran the Hilsa shuttle in 2026, and about 6,500 Indian pilgrims used Humla in 2025. The route was not hit by the August flood. Its weakness is speed: you arrive at 4,600 m within three days of leaving the plains, which is fast for the body. Pilgrims also cannot always get the timing right; in July 2018 more than 1,500 were stranded in Simikot and Hilsa by bad weather (Business Standard).
Can you fly to Lake Manasarovar?
Almost. Ngari Burang Airport, about 56 km from the lake, has flights from Lhasa a few times a week in season. It sits at 4,250 m.
The airport opened on 27 December 2023 and links only to Lhasa, about 2 hours 10 minutes in the air (Wikipedia; Tibettourism). Flights stop in heavy weather; after the September 2026 snow, Lhasa to Burang flights were cancelled. Ngari Gunsa Airport near Shiquanhe (Ali) is the older option, 200 km or more from Darchen.
Flying in saves four days of driving and costs you acclimatisation. Going from Lhasa at 3,650 m to Burang at 4,250 m is a 600 m jump in two hours, and the kora goes far higher. If you fly, add rest days before you walk. The altitude guide explains why.

How do Indian pilgrims get there?
Through the MEA yatra via Lipulekh (Uttarakhand) or Nathu La (Sikkim), or with an approved agency through Nepal, mostly via Simikot and Hilsa.
The government yatra crosses at Lipulekh, from Dharchula through Gunji to the pass and on to Taklakot, or at Nathu La in Sikkim by road. In 2026 it ran from June to August for 1,000 pilgrims chosen by draw. The Nepal route needs an agency approved by the TAR Foreign Affairs Office and the Tibet India Pilgrim Reception Center; most Lhasa agencies cannot book Kailash for Indian passports (Tibet Vista).
Full details, inclusions and eligibility rules are in the yatra guide for Indians.
A 15-day yatra from Kathmandu with time to acclimatise. Confirm the route and passport rules before you pay.
Book thisHow do you get around the lake once you are there?
By car on most tours: the 80 to 90 km lakeshore loop takes about three hours by vehicle, or four to five days on foot.
Most groups drive part or all of the lake circuit, stop at Chiu Gompa above the north-west shore and sleep in a guesthouse below it. Walking the full parikrama is rare on a group tour; ask before you book if you want it. The main Kailash kora starts at Darchen, about 30 to 40 km from Chiu.
Rakshastal, the saline lake to the west, is a short drive and a standard photo stop. Facts and myths explains why the two lakes look so different.

The slow and safe way in: three nights in Lhasa, four days of road west, a night by the lake.
Book this Tour detailsCan you see Kailash without entering Tibet?
Yes, from far west Nepal, but you will not reach the lake or walk the kora that way.
A few treks in Humla climb to viewpoints on the Nepal side where Kailash shows on the skyline. The Kailash view tour from Nepal is one: no Tibet permit, no China visa, and no lake. It suits people who cannot get a Tibet permit this season or who mainly want the view. For the lake itself, plan a real Tibet route for 2027: the 2027 season post tracks what has been confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Lake Manasarovar from Kathmandu?
Roughly 1,000 km by the old road via Kyirong, which is closed. Most trips now fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa and drive about 1,200 to 1,700 km west, or go through Nepalgunj, Simikot and Hilsa.
Is there an airport near Lake Manasarovar?
Yes. Ngari Burang Airport is about 56 km away, with flights from Lhasa only. It sits at 4,250 m, so fly in only with rest days planned.
Can I go to Lake Manasarovar by myself?
No. Foreigners need an agency, a guide and several permits. Indian passport holders need the MEA yatra or an approved pilgrim agency.
Is the Kyirong border open?
Not as of October 2026. The flood of 26 August 2026 destroyed the Rasuwagadhi crossing, and no reopening date had been announced.
