The Kyirong border is closed in 2026

For a decade the road from Kathmandu through Kyirong was the main overland way to Kailash. A flash flood on 26 August closed it for the second time in fourteen months.

On the morning of 26 August 2026 a flash flood came down the Bhote Koshi valley in Rasuwa, north of Kathmandu. It hit Timure and Syabrubesi and wrecked the road to the Rasuwagadhi border, the Nepal side of the Kyirong (Gyirong) crossing into Tibet. About 390 Kailash-bound pilgrims were due to cross that day.

This was the second flood here in just over a year. Below: what happened, which routes from Nepal still work, and what it means if you hold an Indian passport or a booking on the overland route.

The quick answer

The Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong crossing has been closed since the 26 August 2026 flood, with no reopening date. Tatopani-Zhangmu opened for three days of goods traffic from 18 October, not for tourists. The remaining routes from Nepal are the flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, and for the 2027 season the Simikot to Hilsa helicopter route. Do not book the overland Kyirong route for a fixed date until the border reopens.

What happened at Rasuwagadhi on 26 August 2026?

A flash flood on the Bhote Koshi destroyed sections of the road to the border, damaged Timure and Syabrubesi, and closed the crossing to Kyirong.

The Kathmandu Post reported that 390 pilgrims were scheduled to cross that Wednesday, 93 of them Nepali and most of the rest Indian, and that most could not be reached by 3 p.m. Ten Kathmandu agencies had groups on the road. Communication lines in Rasuwa were down, and operators paused departures. The route did not run again in 2026.

The damage goes beyond the road. Nepal has asked China to help rebuild the 16 km Syaphrubesi to Rasuwagadhi road, and customs officials told the Kathmandu Post in September that the border facilities cannot be rebuilt at their former sites. China's support is so far verbal: "A written agreement has not yet been signed." Around 39,000 people in Rasuwa and Nuwakot were affected.

Is this the second flood to close the Kyirong route?

Yes. On 8 July 2025 a glacial lake outburst flood swept away the Miteri (Friendship) Bridge at Rasuwagadhi. The crossing reopened on 1 January 2026.

The 2025 flood came down the Lhende stream from the Tibetan side. The Kathmandu Post reported 18 people missing on the day, and the Miteri Bridge and the dry port were badly damaged. A replacement bridge went in at the end of December 2025, and the border reopened on 1 January 2026, almost six months later.

The 2026 spring season then ran. Kathmandu operators sent pilgrims by road through Kerung (Kyirong) on ten-day packages, until the second flood stopped it in late August. Two floods in fourteen months is the real news here. Even after a rebuild, a road through this gorge is a monsoon risk, and we would plan around that.

Which routes from Nepal to Kailash still work?

Two: fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa and drive west, or take the western route by plane and helicopter via Simikot and Hilsa. Both are for the 2027 season now.

Overland is out. Rasuwagadhi is closed, and YoWangdu lists Kyirong as "closed indefinitely". The old Tatopani-Zhangmu (Kodari) crossing was shut completely by China on 31 August. It opened again on 18 October for three days so that Dashain goods stuck in Nyalam could come through. That was a trade window for containers, and Chinese authorities had not decided on regular operations.

The western route via Simikot was reported unaffected by the flood, but one Nepal operator said all Kailash departures, including that one, were suspended from 27 August while helicopters flew rescue missions. With the kora closed since 26 September, nothing runs to Kailash from any direction until spring. See the kora closure.

What does the Kyirong closure mean for Indian pilgrims?

The main road route from Kathmandu is gone for now. For 2027, Indians going via Nepal will choose between the Simikot to Hilsa route and the Lhasa flight, both through approved agencies.

Kyirong mattered most to Indian pilgrims. Indian passport holders cannot book Kailash through most Lhasa agencies; they go through Nepali or Indian agencies approved for the pilgrim channel. China capped that channel at 24,000 Indians for 2026, up from 20,000 in 2025, against more than 40,000 requests, according to the Kathmandu Post.

The western route is the realistic alternative. Pilgrims fly from Lucknow to Nepalgunj, then to Simikot, and take a helicopter to Hilsa on the border. Hilsa to the lake is about 105 km, roughly four hours by road. The Kathmandu Post counted about 6,500 Indians on the Humla route in 2025, and five helicopter firms were flying it in May 2026. Helicopters carry a few passengers at a time and weather grounds them often, so build in spare days.

The government yatra run by the Ministry of External Affairs does not use Nepal at all: it crosses at Lipulekh in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim. Our guide to the yatra for Indians compares both channels.

I booked the overland yatra via Kyirong. What now?

Do not count on it for a fixed date. Ask the operator to move you to the Simikot or Lhasa version, or to hold your booking until the border reopens.

The overland yatra via Kyirong is the trip this closure hits directly. Even a valid permit is no help: VisaVerge notes that "a closed Rasuwagadhi crossing does not cancel a Tibet Travel Permit", but you cannot use it at a border that is shut.

A second listing depends on the same road. The 19-day Tibet expedition is described as an overland journey on the Friendship Highway from Kathmandu to Lhasa, with a flight back. Neither that trip nor the Kyirong yatra can run as described while the border is shut, so ask the operator how it routes the trip before you book.

Switching changes the trip. The helicopter route needs the flights to Nepalgunj and Simikot, and the Lhasa route adds a flight and extra days. Ask for the new itinerary and price in writing. If your plans for 2027 are fixed, book the route that runs today and treat a reopened Kyirong as a bonus.

When might the Kyirong border reopen?

No date has been given. In 2025 it took almost six months, but this time the border facilities have to move to new sites, and no rebuild schedule has been published.

In September, Experience Tibet reported no confirmed reopening date for Gyirong Port, and the Kathmandu Post said it was unclear when the crossing could reopen. Nepal also wants a long-term road in a safer place, which is a multi-year job. A temporary track could come sooner, but no date has been given.

We will update this post when China or Nepal announces something. Until then, plan 2027 on the routes that work, and check the routes guide before you pay a deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Kyirong border open?

No. The Rasuwagadhi-Kyirong crossing has been closed since the flash flood of 26 August 2026, and no reopening date had been announced by 22 October 2026.

Is the Tatopani border open for Kailash pilgrims?

No. China closed Tatopani-Zhangmu on 31 August 2026 and opened it for three days from 18 October for goods only. It was not opened for tourists.

How can Indians reach Kailash from Nepal without Kyirong?

By the western route (fly to Nepalgunj and Simikot, helicopter to Hilsa, then road to Purang) or by flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa and driving west. Both go through approved agencies.

Does the Simikot to Hilsa route still run?

It was not damaged by the flood, but the 2026 Kailash season is over. Expect it to restart with the 2027 season, subject to China's permits.
