Before you book

A lake you can't swim in, a mountain nobody climbs.

Lake Manasarovar sits in Ngari, the emptiest corner of Tibet, 20 km south-east of Mount Kailash. There is no independent travel here. Foreign visitors need a booked tour with a licensed agency, a Tibetan guide, a Tibet Travel Permit and a stack of military and frontier permits that take three to four weeks to issue. The agency handles all of it, which is what you are paying for.

The other surprise is the holy dip. Blogs still promise one, but bathing and swimming in the lake have been banned since 2018. Pilgrims fill bottles and buckets at the shore and wash on land. Most groups drive the 80 to 90 km around the lake in a few hours, sleep one night in the guesthouses below Chiu Gompa, and save their legs for the Kailash kora: 53 km over three days, across a 5,630 m pass.

4,590

Metres above sea level, give or take a few. At the shore you breathe about 57 percent of the oxygen you get at sea level, so the best itineraries spend three days in Lhasa first.

01

Who can go?

Anyone on an organised tour. Indian passports go through the MEA yatra or approved Nepal agencies.

02

When is it open?

About April or May to mid-October. Snow and permit stops close it the rest of the year.

03

Can I bathe?

No. Bathing has been banned since 2018. You may collect water for rituals.

04

Who should skip it?

Anyone with heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, or no time to acclimatise.

Season, inclusions, permits and the altitude: one tab each.

  • April and May: the first departures, cold nights (around -10°C in April) and clear skies. Cheaper.
  • June: our pick. Dry, bright, warmer. Saga Dawa falls in late May or June and fills Darchen.
  • July and August: the monsoon months and the peak of the Indian yatra season. Cloud on Kailash, mud on Nepal roads.
  • September to mid-October: stable and cold, with the risk of early snow. In 2026 snow closed the kora on 26 September.
  • November to March: the lake freezes and guesthouses shut. No tours.
  • Usually included: Tibet permits, a licensed Tibetan guide, a driver and vehicle, hotels and guesthouses.
  • Often included: lake and kora entry fees, and an airport or hotel pickup at the start.
  • Usually extra: flights to Lhasa or Kathmandu, most meals on the road, porters or yaks on the kora, tips.
  • Always yours to buy: travel insurance that covers trekking above 5,000 m and helicopter evacuation.
  • Tibet Travel Permit, Alien's Travel Permit, Military Area Entry Permit and Frontier Pass: the agency gets them all.
  • Allow three to four weeks. Send your passport and Chinese visa copy as soon as you book.
  • Coming from Nepal, the rules on the China Group Visa have shifted; confirm with your agency in writing.
  • Indian passport holders cannot use most Lhasa agencies: see the guide for Indian pilgrims.
  • Lhasa 3,650 m, Darchen 4,670 m, the lake about 4,590 m, the Dolma La about 5,630 m.

Everything else worth knowing

Timing, what pilgrims wish they had known, the Indian passport question and the fine print.

  • June: the clearest views of Kailash across the water, before the monsoon cloud.
  • Mid-July to August: the peak of the Indian yatra season. Book months ahead and expect full guesthouses.
  • Saga Dawa: the Buddhist festival at Tarboche, 31 May in 2026. Moving to watch, crowded to sleep near.
  • Late September: golden grass and empty trails, with a real chance of snow.
  • Stay a night at the lake, not just a photo stop. The sunrise on Kailash is the reason you came.
  • Bring cash in yuan for porters, yaks, meals and guesthouse extras. Card and app payments can fail up here.
  • Pack a down jacket even in July. Nights at the lake drop below freezing.
  • Take a filter bottle. Lake water is holy; it is not clean enough to drink untreated.
  • Hire a porter or a yak for the kora. Carrying less is the easiest way to make the pass.
  • The MEA yatra opens on kmy.gov.in each spring. Ages 18 to 70, BMI 25 or below, a medical in Delhi.
  • Private yatras go through approved agencies in Nepal, under China's quota for Indian pilgrims.
  • Get your Chinese visa and Tibet permits before you leave India. In 2026 dozens of pilgrims were stuck in Kathmandu without them.
  • Permits for Indian pilgrims were paused during Saga Dawa month in 2026 (17 May to 16 June).
  • Snow can close the kora at short notice: it happened on 26 September 2026.
  • The Kyirong (Rasuwagadhi) crossing from Nepal was destroyed by a flood on 26 August 2026 and is shut indefinitely.
  • Read the cancellation terms on each tour: multi-day Tibet trips often have longer deadlines than day tours.
  • Buy insurance that covers trekking above 5,000 m and helicopter evacuation.

The guide

Lake Manasarovar, explained

Every Kailash tour stops at the lake, but the tours sell it in different ways. Here is what the place is, and what a booking really buys.

One lake, four religions

Hindus know it as Manasarovar, the lake that first took shape in the mind (manas) of Brahma; drinking its water and walking its shore are said to wash away the sins of lifetimes. For Buddhists it is Anavatapta, the lake at the centre of the world, where Queen Maya is said to have bathed before the Buddha's birth. Jains link Kailash to the liberation of Rishabhanatha, and Bon followers, the older religion of Tibet, walk the circuits anticlockwise while everyone else goes clockwise. The Tibetan name, Mapam Yumco, means the invincible turquoise lake.

The shore once had eight monasteries. Several are ruins since the Cultural Revolution; Chiu Gompa, on a rock above the north-west shore, and Trugo Gompa on the south shore are the two most groups visit.

Manasarovar, the lake of light, and Rakshastal, the lake of the demon king, side by side.

The twin lake next door

Just west lies Rakshastal: crescent-shaped, salty and almost lifeless, linked to Manasarovar by a short channel, the Ganga Chhu. Tradition ties it to Ravana's penance. It is the real "mystery" behind the viral videos, and you see it from the road on every tour. Lights at dawn, gods bathing before sunrise, NASA studies and planes that cannot fly over Kailash belong to the realm of belief or rumour; our facts and myths guide sorts them out.

The honest small print: the holy dip in the photos is not allowed any more. Since 2018 pilgrims take water from the shore and wash on land. And a "Kailash view tour" from Nepal shows you the mountain from across the border; it never reaches the lake. Each of our tour pages says where a trip really goes.

Lhasa, Kathmandu or the official yatra

Most foreign travellers fly to Lhasa, spend three days adjusting to the altitude and drive west for four or five days. It is the slow way and the safe one. From Nepal, the overland route via Kyirong is shut after the August 2026 flood, which leaves the flight to Lhasa or the small-plane and helicopter route through Simikot and Hilsa. Indian citizens have a third option, the government-run yatra through Lipulekh or Nathu La. The route guide compares them all.

Timing it

June is the sweet spot: dry, bright and before the monsoon cloud. July and August bring the yatra crowds and rain, and late September brings golden light and the first snow. Book at least a month ahead so the permits come through, and keep a spare day in your plans: roads, weather and permits change fast in Ngari.

FAQ

Questions before you book

Straight answers to what people ask most about Lake Manasarovar and Kailash.

In which country is Lake Manasarovar?

China. The lake lies in Burang (Purang) County, Ngari Prefecture, in the far west of the Tibet Autonomous Region, close to the borders with Nepal and India. Its Tibetan name is Mapam Yumco. You enter either from Lhasa or from Nepal, never directly from India except on the government yatra. See how to get there.

Can Indians visit Mansarovar Lake?

Yes, by two routes. The Ministry of External Affairs runs the official yatra through the Lipulekh and Nathu La passes (1,000 places in 2026, chosen by computer draw), and approved agencies in Nepal run private yatras under a separate quota (24,000 places in 2026). Most Lhasa agencies cannot book Indian passport holders. Details in the guide for Indian pilgrims.

What does a Kailash Mansarovar tour include?

Usually the Tibet permits, a licensed Tibetan guide, a driver and vehicle, simple hotels and guesthouses, and the lake and kora fees. Flights, most meals, porters or yaks on the kora, tips and insurance are usually extra. Every listing differs, so read its inclusions. The inclusions guide goes line by line.

Which month is best to visit Kailash Mansarovar?

June and September. May and June are clear and dry, July and August bring the monsoon and the most pilgrims, and late September to early October is cold but stable. From November to March the lake freezes and almost nothing runs. More in the month-by-month guide.

What is the oxygen level at Kailash Mansarovar?

At the lake, about 4,590 m, the air holds roughly 56 to 57 percent of the oxygen you breathe at sea level. On the Dolma La, the 5,630 m pass on the Kailash kora, it drops to about half. That is why every good itinerary spends three days in Lhasa first. Read altitude and safety.

Can you bathe in or drink the water of Lake Manasarovar?

You cannot bathe. Swimming and bathing in the lake have been banned since 2018, and fishing is banned too. Pilgrims fill bottles and buckets at the shore and wash with that water on land. Drink it only after filtering or boiling, as with any surface water.

What is the mystery of Lake Manasarovar?

The real puzzle is the pair of lakes: round, freshwater Manasarovar sits right beside crescent-shaped, salty Rakshastal, joined by a short channel called the Ganga Chhu. The rest (lights at dawn, Brahma's mind, gods bathing before sunrise) is belief, and worth hearing as belief. See facts and myths.

Can you climb Mount Kailash?

No. Climbing is forbidden, and nobody has ever summited. Reinhold Messner turned down an offer of a permit in the 1980s, and a Spanish request in 2001 was refused after protests. Pilgrims walk around the mountain instead: the kora is 53 km over three days, crossing the Dolma La.

Is Kailash taller than Mount Everest?

No. Kailash is about 6,638 m; Everest is 8,848.86 m, the figure China and Nepal agreed in 2020. Kailash is not even among the hundred highest peaks. It feels huge because it stands alone, a dark four-sided dome above the plateau.

Why can't planes fly over Mount Kailash?

They can, and some do. Ngari Burang Airport opened in December 2023 about 56 km from the lake, with flights from Lhasa. There are simply no busy air routes over remote western Tibet. No published no-fly zone is tied to the mountain, and the NASA stories online cite no actual study.

How risky is the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

The real risks are altitude sickness, cold, and weather or road closures that strand groups. Pilgrims have died of altitude sickness and heart problems, so the MEA screens its yatris medically. Acclimatise, take insurance with helicopter evacuation, and turn back if symptoms grow.

Can I visit Lake Manasarovar on my own?

Not as a foreign tourist. Tibet requires a booked tour with a licensed agency and guide, plus a Tibet Travel Permit, an Alien's Travel Permit and military and frontier permits for Ngari. The agency arranges them, which takes three to four weeks. Indian passport holders go through the pilgrim channels.
