Booking choice: The 15-day yatra from Kathmandu, 15 days. Book this Tour details
For Hindus, Kailash is the home of Shiva and Parvati, and Manasarovar is the lake traditionally said to have been formed in Brahma's mind. For many families the yatra is a once-in-a-life journey. The paperwork is the part nobody warns you about.
In 2026 the Indian government ran its yatra for 1,000 pilgrims, and China allowed 24,000 more through Nepal. Both channels closed for the season by autumn. This guide uses the MEA announcement, the 2026 application details and the Kathmandu Post on the Nepal route.
The quick answer
Yes, Indians can visit, in two ways. The MEA yatra via Lipulekh or Nathu La is chosen by computer draw: Indian citizens aged 18 to 70, BMI 25 or below, passing medical tests. The private route goes through approved agencies in Nepal, mostly via Simikot and Hilsa, under a 2026 cap of 24,000 Indian pilgrims. OCI and PIO holders cannot join the MEA yatra. Bathing in the lake is not allowed.

Can Indians visit Kailash Mansarovar?
Yes. Indian citizens can go on the MEA yatra or with a private agency approved for Indian pilgrims. Most ordinary Lhasa tour agencies cannot book Kailash for an Indian passport.
China handles Indian pilgrims through the TAR Foreign Affairs Office and the Tibet India Pilgrim Reception Center, not through the normal tourist permit system. Tibet Vista, one of the largest Lhasa agencies, says it can arrange Lhasa and Everest for Indians but not Kailash. Indian-origin travellers on a US, UK or other foreign passport can book a normal Tibet tour.
The yatra was suspended from 2020 and resumed in 2025, when 750 pilgrims went on the MEA yatra. In 2026 the MEA batch total rose to 1,000.

How does the MEA Kailash Mansarovar Yatra work?
You apply online at kmy.gov.in in spring, a computerised draw picks the batches, then you pass medical tests in Delhi before travelling in a group of 50.
In 2026 applications ran from 30 April to 19 May on kmy.gov.in. You can choose Lipulekh, Nathu La or both. The draw is randomised and gender-balanced. Selected pilgrims pay a non-refundable confirmation fee, report to Delhi for medical screening, sign indemnity bonds and hand over their passport for the visa. The first Nathu La batch was flagged off from Delhi on 12 June 2026, and the first Lipulekh batch left Tanakpur on 5 July.
The 2027 dates and quota have not been announced yet. Watch kmy.gov.in from March. Our 2027 season post will log the dates when they appear.

Who is eligible for the MEA yatra?
Indian citizens aged 18 to 70 with a BMI of 25 or below who pass the medical screening. Passports must be valid well beyond the season.
- Citizenship: Indian passport holders only. Foreign nationals and OCI cardholders are not eligible (Organiser).
- Age: 18 to 70 on the cut-off date.
- BMI: 25 or below. This rule rejects many applicants every year, so check yours before you apply.
- Health: the screening excludes people with heart disease, asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure.
- Passport: in 2026, valid at least six months beyond September 2026 (Outlook Traveller).
These are strict for a reason. The rules mirror what doctors worry about above 5,000 m, and they are a fair benchmark even if you go privately.
Not selected in the draw? A 15-day yatra from Kathmandu goes via Nepal. Check it accepts Indian passports first.
Book thisWhich MEA route is better, Lipulekh or Nathu La?
Nathu La is easier on the body and the dearer of the two in the MEA estimates. Lipulekh is about a day longer and has real trekking on the Indian side.
Lipulekh (about 22 days) goes from Delhi to Tanakpur and Dharchula in Uttarakhand, then up the Kali valley past Gunji to the pass and down to Taklakot. Expect several days of walking and road through mountain country before you reach Tibet. Nathu La (about 21 days) goes by road through Gangtok and Sikkim into Tibet, then drives across the plateau.
Both include the lake and the Kailash parikrama. If your fitness is borderline, Nathu La is the safer pick. If money matters and you can walk, Lipulekh.

How does the private yatra through Nepal work?
You book an approved agency, which gets your Chinese visa and Tibet permits, then fly to Nepalgunj and Simikot or to Lhasa. In 2026 the cap was 24,000 Indian pilgrims.
Demand was over 40,000 against that cap, and it filled by mid-June (Kathmandu Post). Routes on offer in 2026: the 8-day Simikot and Hilsa helicopter route, 10 days by road via Kerung (now closed after the August flood), and packages flying Kathmandu to Lhasa. Agencies quote them as packages, so compare what each one includes: visa, permits, helicopter seats, meals and the kora porter. Lucknow departures to Nepalgunj are common, because Lucknow is about three hours by road from the border.
One rule matters. In June 2026 the MEA told pilgrims to get the Chinese visa and Tibet permits before leaving India, after about 50 Indians were stuck in Kathmandu without them (report). Do not travel on an agency's promise that papers will be ready on arrival.

Fly Kathmandu to Lhasa, then drive west: the longer, gentler way to the lake. Confirm Indian passport acceptance with the operator.
Book this Tour detailsCan you take a holy dip in Lake Manasarovar?
No. Bathing in the lake has been banned since 2018. Pilgrims may still collect water for religious use and carry it home.
Many Indian agency pages still advertise a snan in the lake. That is out of date. Chinese rules forbid swimming and bathing, and fishing is banned too (Kathmandu Post; Wonders of Tibet). What pilgrims do instead is pour lake water over themselves at the shore or in a tent, drawn by bucket, with no soap or shampoo. Your guide will show you where.
Bring a sealed bottle or a small steel or copper vessel for the water.

When should Indian pilgrims plan for 2027?
Watch for the MEA notice in spring 2027, usually from April. Private Nepal agencies open bookings once China confirms the quota.
Two windows block Indian permits. Saga Dawa month (17 May to 16 June in 2026) when permits for Indian pilgrims were not issued (Nagarjuna Travels), and winter, when the kora is closed. In 2026 the season ended early: heavy snow closed the kora on 26 September and permits were reported suspended from 20 October. One Nepal operator listed the 2026 season as closed for Indian passports by October.
The safe plan: decide on MEA or private by March, have your passport valid to at least mid-2028, and book the Nepal route early if you go private, since the cap filled in weeks this year. The best time guide covers the months.
The 11-day Kailash pilgrimage from Kathmandu, with the three-day kora. Ask about 2027 dates and Indian passport rules.
Book thisIs the Kailash yatra the toughest yatra?
Many pilgrims rank it the hardest Hindu yatra. The reason is altitude, not distance: the parikrama crosses the Dolma La at about 5,630 m.
Day two of the kora, from Dirapuk over the Dolma La to Zutulpuk, is about 24 km, and it is the day most people struggle with (Tibet Vista kora guide). Pilgrims who cannot walk it hire a pony and a horseman, or stay in Darchen and view the south face. Neither choice is a failure. Our altitude guide covers how to prepare.
Frequently asked questions
Can OCI card holders go on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?
Not on the MEA yatra, which is for Indian passport holders only. An OCI holder travelling on a foreign passport books a normal Tibet tour instead.
Is there an age limit for Kailash Mansarovar?
Yes. The MEA yatra takes Indian citizens aged 18 to 70, and Chinese rules also cap private pilgrims at 70.
Do Indians need a visa for Kailash Mansarovar?
Yes, a Chinese visa plus Tibet permits. On the MEA yatra the ministry arranges it; on the Nepal route the agency does. Get both before you leave India.
Can I bring Manasarovar water home?
Yes. Collecting water for religious use is allowed. Bathing in the lake is not.
